Overview

The Laborer performs a variety of tasks under close supervision of higher-level employees. These tasks may include assisting with extra workload, covering absences and vacations, and supplementing crews to meet unusual changes in the production area or in the weather. 

 

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Control traffic passing near, in, or around work zones. 
  • Clean or prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards. 
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, or adjustment of machinery, equipment, or materials. 
  • Load, unload, or identify building materials, or tools, distributing them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans or specifications. 
  • Measure, mark, or record openings or distances to layout areas where construction work will be performed. 
  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, or compact and level earth to grade specifications, using a variety of power and hand tools. 
  • Tend pumps, compressors, or generators to provide power for tools, machinery, or equipment or to heat or move materials, such as dirt, gravel, and asphalt. 
  • Cleans tools, equipment, and work areas. 

 

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions. 
  • Ability to work in a variety of roles. 
  • The employee in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the company’s safety policies and procedures as described in the company’s safety manual. 
  • Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred. 
  • Experience and Training: Three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
